Many people are attracted to the idea of working from home online. The media frequently carry stories of people who have given up their day jobs and have become successful working from home online in their own businesses. Although the idea of being your own boss and working from home may be appealing, it is important for anyone who wishes to attempt it, to be aware of the pitfalls because it is not really as simple as one may think.

In this article we will discuss some important points to keep in mind if the idea of working from home is something that appeals to you.

It is essential for anyone who chooses to work from home to be able to separate their work life from their home life. This may seem like a trivial point, but it can be quite a problem if not taken into account right from the start. When you go out to work in a day job, the last thing on your mind is the washing, ironing or the possibility that the house may be in a total state of chaos, you are usually able to focus completely on the task at hand and get on with the job.

When you work from home all of these household duties are in your face, and it is really easy to fall into the trap of spending more time on carrying out these duties than doing any actual work on your online business. For this reason alone it is essential that you become very self-disciplined. For example if you set yourself the hours of nine till two pm everyday as your business hours, then sit down in your office and devote these hours to your online business work and only leave the office if it is absolutely necessary such as getting something to drink or to go to the toilet. Do not have anything in your office that is likely to distract you from your task at hand.

To work successfully from home on your own business requires a good deal of self-belief in your own ability. There will always be ups and downs and some months will be great while in other months everything will appear to go wrong. Having the confidence in yourself and your own ability will help you to overcome the bad times.

A good idea when the times are great and the money is coming in regularly is to save some of it for when thing go wrong and you are not generating the same amount of income.

It is important for anyone who works from home to be able to remain motivated. Remember that there is no boss to inspire you to keep working nor is there anyone else that you can bounce ideas off.

There are people who cannot work from home as they simply find it too lonely and they will return to the workplace where they can then have greater contact with other people. Remembering the advantages one has when working from home is especially important when things are not going as well as we hoped, as this is usually the times when the lack of company is felt the most strongly.

Personally I believe that there is nothing better than being your own boss and working from home particularly on your own online business, and with the right attitude it is possible that many other people could quite happily do the same thing.

Here is a guest post from Graham Bray on developing an e-course as an online income opportunity, please enjoy it.

We live in the information age.  More and more people are now turning to the internet to extend their learning.  With increased university fees, uncertainty in the job market and a continuing fragile world economy the internet is seen as the vehicle for ongoing education.  Learning really is for life, and providing relevant and effective e-courses can be a wonderful and rewarding home-based business.

By definition, an e-course is a class or course (audio, video, text – or any combination of these) where readers learn and develop their skills in a particular subject area.  The e-course is delivered over the internet, and the worldwide e-learning industry is estimated to be worth over $50 billion!

As with any other type of course, your e-course should be split into a number of short ‘episodes’ that are inter-linked and flow through a common theme.  As a teacher I prepare mini e-courses every day, and my tool of choice is Powerpoint.  For a given topic I produce a number of clear, colourful and well illustrated slides which I can then add my narration to.

There are other software packages on the market, such as Camtasia, that enable you to draw together different types of media including word documents, audio clips and sections of video into very neat and professional-looking products.  I really enjoy constructing my e-courses, and I really would recommend that you give it a try!

But what should your e-course be about?  Basically, anything that really takes your interest!  The more passionate you are about something, the more committed you will be to the project, so it’s worth choosing a hobby or past-time that you can talk about with a little authority.  Your hobby may be fishing, or cake baking, or rebuilding old motor bikes, or participating in ultra-marathons!

Whatever you choose put yourself in the position of somebody just starting out.  What would they need to know?  What equipment or kit would you recommend?  How could you deliver a step-by-step guide to get them started?
Indeed, your e-course could be ten parts long, with each part focused on a particular question.  Once you start to produce your e-course you’ll be amazed at how the ideas just flow!

Start small and just experiment with the basic tools.  Be prepared to make a few mistakes – you’ll be learning just as much as your readers.

Having built the e-course the next stage is to actually get it out in front of your readers.  This involves developing your internet marketing, but for that you will probably want to study an e-course yourself!

Working long hours for someone else is something that can be frustrating especially if you have been at your job for quite some time. An online home based business can change all of this and you will be able to work for yourself and all of the profits will be put into your pocket.

The first thing you need to do when looking for a home business is to watch out for scams.  This is something that can happen to anyone and the way scammers are reaching people has become more complex.  You might think you have found the perfect opportunity, but it could turn out to be a scam.

If you are required to pay an outrageous start up fee this can be a red flag.  There are some opportunities that do require a small start up fee, but you should look at what is included for this fee.  You might get a website or marketing tools and this can be well worth a small start up fee.

Conducting an independent search online about each business you want to know more about will usually alert you to scams.  Most people that have been scammed are real quick to spread the word to protect other people.

The right online home based business can change your entire life.  If you are careful to watch out for scams, you will be able to find some legitimate opportunities.  The marketing will be up to you and you can take your new business very far.
