Have you ever thought about how nice it would be to work from home in your own legitimate online business and just don’t know what you would be able to do?

If you enjoy writing in any form be it creative or technical there is a lot of money to be made doing this online from home and you can get a lot of fun doing it as a full time or part time occupation. As a freelance writer you have the freedom to work according to you own schedule and your own time.

Before getting started you will need to plan and do your homework on what exactly you will need to do so that you can earn enough online income to support yourself and a family if you have one.

Here are some tips to get you started on and building a successful online writing business from home:

1.  To start off with you will need a computer and an email address that is used strictly for your business.  You will also need somewhere that you can dedicate as your office space where you have a desk a comfortable chair, your computer with a fast internet connection, a printer and a scanner.

2.  You will need to advertise your business because if you don’t do this no one will know that you are out there, so having either a simple website or a blog would be a good idea as it would be a place where you could not only place samples of your writing skills but it would also be a central point for people to find you. You could include a page with your resume and credentials.

The internet is a great place to market yourself and your business and in the writing business it is important to brand yourself and become well known if you want to be in demand and make money.

3.  You will also need to decide on the prices you will charge depending on the project you are asked to undertake. There are a variety of  services that you can offer such as writing articles, doing blog posts, adding web content or writing press releases. The majority of online freelance writers will generally set a flat rate for each project rather than charging by the hour. A good way to decide on your rates would be to check what other freelance writers charge and work out an average price for yourself.

4.  Make a list of people who may be interested in your services and send them an email. Let them know that you are now in business for yourself and ask them if they have no use for your service whether they can refer you to someone else. Share your news with friends, family and previous working colleagues and always carry business cards when you go out.

There are a number of websites online where you can register and list the writing services that you are offering for example Elance.com or Real Writing Jobs.com. This is great way to get started in the beginning and it will bring in some online income from the start at least until you manage to build up a clientele of your own.

If you intend doing this full time from the start then have at least 6 months to a years worth of savings to use for living expenses as it will take the strain of not enough income off your shoulders and you can then concentrate on building a successful online writing business from home.
